Rooted in deep spirituality, the Ofala is the highpoint of the Onitsha ceremonial cycle. It is primarily a celebration by the monarch and his subjects to mark the monarch’s annual emergence from seclusion, during which period he has successfully negotiated the fortunes of the kingdom. The Ofala also marks the homecoming of Onitsha indigenes.
The digital transformation leader, Globacom, has been the official sponsors of the Ofala since 2011. Globacom’s partnership with the organisers of the festival over the years has helped enormously in projecting the Ofala.
The actual Ofala which is a display of royal dances, tributes, parades and music running over two days, will take place on October 11 and 12. The scope of the festival has been widened, with various events now part of the celebrations.
A joint statement issued by the Ofala Steering Committee and Globacom, said the 2019 Ofala will not only display the rich cultural heritage of Onicha Ado N’Idu, it will also be ten days of unstoppable fun and entertainment for both visitors and residents.

The statement also stated that both Onicha Ado NIdu and Globacom looked forward to a continued partnership such that Globacom as major sponsor “would in its usual manner make contributions towards the growth and development of the festival.
The 2019 Ofala events will kick off on Saturday, October 5 with the maiden edition of the Onitsha City Marathon, organised by the Onitsha Business School. The 21-kilometre road race has been approved by both the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), and the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).
Many renowned international marathoners particularly from countries with road racing records like Kenya, Ethiopia, Ugandan and Diaspora Nigerian elite athletes have entered for the event.
This will be followed by the Oreze Arts VII, a group art exhibition promoted by His Majesty’s Chimedie Museum Trust Foundation and supported by the National Gallery of Art . Presidency Rejects Abiodun, Sanwo-olu’s Bids To Toll Three Ogun-Lagos Federal RoadsPlans by the Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun and his Lagos State counterpart, Babajide Sanwo-Olu to commercialize the Ikorodu-Sagamu, Epe-Ijebu-Ode and Lagos-Abeokuta roads, by taking them over from the Federal Government seem to have suffered a setback as the Presidency did not agree to the proposal. We learned that the Presidency refused to handover the three roads to the government of Ogun and Lagos States for undisclosed reasons. We reported in September that the duo of Abiodun and Sanwo-Olu had agreed to commercialize the three federal roads in order to make their maintenance an easy task; by allowing private investors fund and toll the roads so as to ease transportation of people from Lagos to Abeokuta. However, Gov Abiodun, speaking on Thursday at the Statutory Meeting of Ogun State Council of Obas, held at the Obas Complex, Okemosan, Abeokuta, said the Presidency had replied in the negative to a joint letter written by the two states.Abiodun disclosed that the Federal Government said it would rather partner with Lagos and Ogun in repairing the roads, instead of handing them over. The Ogun State Governor, who was not satisfied with the decision of the Presidency, said he would re-echo the need to transfer the roads to Ogun and Lagos States in another meeting coming up later this month. His words: “Governor Sanwo-Olu and I actually put pen on paper and wrote a joint letter to the Federal Government and demanded that these roads be handed over to us so that we can commercialize them. We have since gotten a response from the Federal Government asking us that, rather than to transfer these roads to us, they want to partner with us.“I was at Abuja last week to discuss this matter with the Presidency and they have asked us to come for a meeting. Because if you take a look at the Lagos-Ota road for an example, and look at the budget that has just been submitted; that budget provided for about N200 billion for federal roads. There is a road in Ogun State today that will cost about N60 billion to repair; just in Ogun State alone. So how can N200b suffice to repair roads in Nigeria? On the Lagos-Ota road, the Federal Government is owing contractors N26 billion, so where do we start from?“Last week, we had a meeting with the Presidency and Ministry of Finance and we’re looking at alternative means of funding these roads and we’re going to be visiting this issue of transferring the roads to us.”
“We Will Soon Expose The ‘Bad Eggs’ Among Us – HerdsmenMiyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has warned its members in Nasarawa State against deliberate encroachment on farmlands. State chairman of the association, Mohammed Husaini, gave the warning during a meeting with members on Saturday in Keana Local Government Area (LGA).The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting had in attendance herders from Keana, Obi and Awe LGAs.According to the chairman, as leaders, they will expose the bad elements among them to the security agencies for immediate prosecution. He said that the association would not continue to fold its arms to allow some unpatriotic members to undermine the current peace in the state through their illegal activities.“We will set up monitoring committee to monitor the activities of our members and report the bad elements to us for onward report to the security agencies. “We will also confiscate the cows of anyone caught destroying farmland deliberately to serve as deterrent to others,” he said. The chairman added that the leadership was conducting an investigation to fish out members that recently attacked and amputated the hands of a farmer in Keana.“The perpetrators of the crime will never go unpunished, as we will get them and make them face the full wrath of the law,” he said.Hussaini further said that, just like the herders, farmers were also earning their livelihoods through their farms, stressing there was no justification whatsoever for any herder to destroy crops.Mr Ubi Haruna, Benue State Chairman of Miyette Allah, who was also at the meeting, commended the government of Benue State for showing understanding with the Fulani people in the state. He promised that the Fulani people living in Benue would continue to be law abiding and support the government to succeed.According to him, the association would expose any herder who either destroys crops or kills anybody to the security agencies for prosecution.NAN reports that the meeting was also attended by Alhaji Abu Giza, Chairman of Keana LGA and the representatives of the Army, Police, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NCSDC) among others.
Okorocha In Big Mess For Refusing To Pay Pensioners During His TenureThe Chairman of Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Samuel Agunwa Ohiri, has berated former Governor of the state, Rochas Okorocha, over his inability to pay pensioners during his tenure.Ohiri described as shameful and disappointing the inability of Okorocha to pay pensioners in spite of the huge resources at his disposal. The traditional ruler stated this while addressing journalists in his palace in Owerri, the state capital over the weekend. He lamented that Okorocha merely played politics with the wellbeing of the pensioners throughout his administration.According to Ohiri, Okorocha-led administration conducted “unending verification exercises” that never yielded any result. He said:“Perhaps, Okorocha government may have been using the unending verification exercises to undermine the payment of pensioners in the state.“Before this present administration, there were series of unending verification exercises of pensioners in the state and for me, I felt like the government was kind of playing games with our senior citizens and that wasn’t right.“At every opportunity, I made it known to the governor and the government that they needed to take care of our senior citizens, but nothing came out of it.”He, however, commended Governor Emeka Ihedioha for commencing the payment of pensioners. He said:“I want to thank God Almighty that finally something is being done through Governor Emeka Ihedioha. I have to say that in honesty and sincerity, I am happy that at this point that our pensioners are beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel.“I also commend the process, because it is not just paying them, it requires some planning. First of all, we need to understand and to know how many pensioners we have in the state and truly and accurately how much is due to each of them.“And such planning and well thought out process was what I felt was lacking in the previous administration in the state.“Also, before now, some of the problems that we had or some of the complaints I received as the chairman of council of traditional rulers from these pensioners include that every month the government can decide to pay them arbitrary figures.“Somebody that was supposed to get N70, 000 or N60, 000 was paid N13, 000 or N15, 000. And nobody knew how government arrived at those figures. And they couldn’t go to anybody to get answers to those questions.“But now I thank God that the government has begun payment to them 100 per cent. So, I want to say that I have good faith in the exercise that has just been concluded and I believe it was sincere, honest and reliable.”

OMG!! Police Rescue 147 Victims From Another Kaduna Islamic Rehabilitation Center, Buhari reacts (Photo)The police have busted another illegal Islamic rehabilitation center in Rigasa, Kaduna State and rescued 147 victims. Some of the victims were met in chains. The facility is popularly known as Malam Niga’s Rehabilitation Centre.Among those rescued included 22 females and four foreigners while the owner of the center was whisked away by security operatives for interrogation. In another news, President Muhammadu Buhari has commended the Nigeria Police Force for the discovery of a child-theft racket in Kano State and fake correctional centers in Kaduna and Katsina states.Recall that the Police last Monday discovered another torture centre meant to be a reformation place for children with character deformation in Daura, Katsina State. The Police raided the centre following a riot by the inmates over excessive abuses.Reacting to the discovery, Buhari in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, on Saturday, urged the police to sustain these good efforts across the country. He noted that such arrests were in line with his commitment to human rights and dignity of the citizens regardless of their age, religion and ethnicity.Buhari said he would not support criminality under any guise, including the abduction of children and selling them off illegally. He maintained that no responsible democratic government would tolerate the existence of the torture chambers and physical abuses of inmates in the name of rehabilitation of the victims. He, therefore, lauded the efforts of the police in exposing these human rights abuses by individuals and criminal groups.Buhari expressed optimism that these efforts would be sustained to check illegal activities of this nature. The President appealed to members of the general public to remain vigilant and assist security agencies in crime prevention and control by reporting the existence of criminal activities around their communities. He said: ”The sharing of human intelligence is everybody’s responsibility in order to make our society safe and this government is ever committed to supporting the police to be more effective in the performance of its duties through proper funding and motivation of its personnel.”
Parents Aid Sex-for-marks In Universities – ABU VC RevealsThe Vice Chancellor of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Professor Ibrahim Garba has stated that parents aid sex-for-marks acts in universities.Professor Garba who spoke during a phone-in Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) Kaduna programme, stated that parents also deserve to be blamed for the sex-for-marks acts witnessed in universities for failing in the upbringing of their children. He said“University is not like secondary school as students are free on the assumption that they are matured. Since we don’t have the right to restrict the liberties given to the students by the system, we put in place measures that would protect them.“The decay in our moral training is alarming. Parents no longer correct their wards where they go wrong. Children are now the ones controlling their parents. Some of these students are over pampered.“Some parents have gotten illicit funds; therefore, they release this money to their children without control. You can have a student with money in her account that is far above her lecturer’s salary. You see students driving expensive cars or using expensive mobile phones.“All these make the students lazy and therefore have to resort to other means to pass exams. This makes them to even take themselves to some bad elements among the lecturers for them to pass exams. However, we put stringent measures in place to punish anyone involves in this bad behaviour.”
